MISSION
As part of fulfilling its mandate, Umvoti Municipality commits itself to:
• Provide democratic, transparent and accountable local government;• Ensure equity and integrated transformation;
• Ensure sound inter-governmental relations for integrated development planning;
• Facilitate economic and social development;
• Promote a safe and healthy environment; and
• Render and expand affordable and sustainable services in a transparent and accountable manner and promote a culture of payment for services.
The Planning and Economic Services department plays a crucial role in guiding sustainable development, managing land use, and promoting economic growth through strategies like local economic development (LED), spatial planning, and tourism, while also addressing human settlements and environmental issues.
Core responsibilities and functions:
- Land Use Planning and Management:
- Developing and implementing spatial plans to guide the physical development of the municipality.
- Managing land use rights, building plans, and development controls.
- Ensuring compliance with zoning regulations and building codes.
- Local Economic Development (LED):
- Identifying and promoting local economic opportunities.
- Attracting investment and supporting local businesses.
- Creating employment opportunities and alleviating poverty.
- Human Settlements:
- Addressing housing needs and managing informal settlements.
- Developing and implementing housing policies and programs.
- Providing infrastructure and services to communities.
- Tourism:
- Promoting the municipality as a tourist destination.
- Developing and managing tourism infrastructure and services.
- Supporting tourism businesses and initiatives.
- Integrated Development Planning (IDP):
- Developing and implementing the municipality's IDP, which is a strategic framework for development.
- Coordinating the efforts of different departments and stakeholders.
- Monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the IDP.
- Other Functions:
- Facilitating the development of relevant policies and bylaws.
- Managing property management and housing.
- Providing technical support to other municipal departments.
